Minnesota Diverse Legislature Policies
Leigh Finke, the first transgender person elected to Minnesota’s state legislature.

USA Today
released
its 2023 “Women of the Year” list. It includes a distinguished woman from each of the 50 states and U.S. territories, and a handful of national honorees. Some of these women really are incredible: Nicole Mann, for example. She was the first Native American
woman in space
and the commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission — she’s also a mother. Nineteen-year-old Dasia Taylor from Iowa “invented an infection-detecting suture, then founded an inclusion-focused medical device company.”

Then there’s
Minnesota
: USA Today chose Leigh Finke to represent the North Star state, the first transgender legislator in Minnesota’s House of Representatives. Finke is a biological man who transitioned to live as a woman in 2017. Finke’s politics aside, this is someone who has lived as a man the majority of their adult life. This is an affront to other extraordinary Minnesota women. It didn’t take long to find some amazing women in Minnesota. Women worthy of note, perhaps even in a national publication.

‘TWO SEXES, AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT’: BIOLOGIST DEFENDS JK ROWLING’S COMMENTS

Minnesota is home to the renowned Mayo Clinic, one of the top health institutions in the world. Dr. Robin Patel, a woman, received the 2022
Distinguished Mayo Clinic Investigator Award
for “significant lifetime contributions to research in the areas of periprosthetic joint infection, antimicrobial resistance and advanced microbial diagnostics.” Sound impressive enough?

How about women in politics? State Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, the state’s first Latina legislator, announced her retirement after 16 years this past year. Surely she’s earned some kind of recognition for promoting diversity in public service? This last election, 25-year-old Zaynab Mohamed became one of the first black women and the youngest woman elected to Minnesota’s state Senate.

Minnesota boasts accomplished women in many fields; business, law, politics, health, and more. For USA Today to recognize a transgender woman, a biological man who lived well into his 30s as a man, and ignore any of these women listed, makes a mockery of male and female differences. It’s disheartening to see biological men continue to usurp women for their own recognition, stealing their limelight and kudos, just because it’s now seen as inclusive to allow biological men to take the place of women anywhere.
